28th March 2009 Windsurfing: Hookipa Wind Direction: NE Wind Stength: Surf / Sea State: Air Temperature: Sea Temperature: Weather: Sunny spells Max Speed: Distance Covered: A hangover recovery day at a surprisingly uncrowded Ho'okipa. At last a slight drop in the wind. 4.5 was perfect. Sooo nice not to be overpowered on the wave. Scrappy short period swell in the boom to half-mast range with the occasional logo+ set. Mainly one-hit wonders but I scored loads of nice turns nevertheless on some silky smooth faces. All was going well until the wind went very light at the end of the day. I only just made it back upwind to the beach and then ballsed up my landing resulting in my first mini taste of the Ho'okipa rock garden. But no damage done. Interesting to read my diary entry from my first Ho'okipa session on 30th Jan: "...I'm not convinced that sailing here is worth the hassle. The waves may be bigger than anywhere else on Maui's north shore but the dodgy launch, the number of other people on the water and the constant threat of ending up on the rocks definitely limited my enjoyment of the sailing today. Maybe with time I will start to desire the challenges that Ho'okipa offers..." That prophecy has become true. I've pretty much lost my Ho'okipa fear at least on the small-medium days for which it has become the beach of choice. Very keen to sail there now on a bigger and cleaner swell. |
